Trust the Momentum: Let Past Progress Carry You Forward

June’s theme, Trust the Momentum, invites us to recognize that progress is not always created in the present moment. Often, the energy, strength, resilience, and confidence we experience today are the result of seeds planted weeks, months, or even years ago.

As we move into a season filled with activity and opportunity it can be tempting to focus only on what still needs to be done. Yet June encourages a different perspective: take a moment to notice what is already carrying you forward. The habits you've built, the challenges you've navigated, the strength you've developed, and the lessons you've learned have created momentum. Rather than constantly generating new energy, sometimes our greatest opportunity is to trust and utilize the energy that already exists.

In physical therapy and wellness, healing and strengthening do not happen overnight. Having been consistent and put in the effort throughout the first half of the year, this month is a time to trust the foundation, trust the momentum, and be sure to take time to enjoy the ride.

Just as a surfer doesn't create the wave but learns to recognize it and move with it, we can learn to recognize the momentum already present in our lives. Instead of pushing harder at every opportunity, we can ask ourselves: Where is progress already unfolding? Where am I being supported by the work I've done before? What strengths, skills, or habits are available to me now because of choices I made in the past?

Take a moment to listen closely to your body and the bodies of the clients who trust us.  Is there a goal that we’ve been pushing too hard for? Is there strength that isn’t possible to attain right now? How can we support the rest of our holistic selves.  Maybe bracing or taping are the right approach instead of aggressive strengthening. Maybe rest for a week or two is the right cure. Or maybe the momentum of the hard work of strengthening and flexibility training are about to have a breakthrough and we should continue to ride that wave. By recognizing the energy generated from past work, we can move forward with greater confidence, greater ease, and a deeper appreciation for the journey that has brought us here.

This June, remember that growth isn't always about creating a new wave. It's also about learning how to enjoy and to ride the wave you've already worked to get on.
